Culture and Climate DPF

Essential Functions

  • Proactive support for building the foundational practices for school culture and climate by providing training, technical assistance, and on-going support and coaching to site staff

  • Support staff to develop a strong school community and classroom culture at the beginning of the year and throughout, building relationships with students and families.

  • Support engagement teams to conduct climate audits, and learning walks to review climate practices

  • Consult with school leaders to roll out Social Emotional Learning programs such as:
    Responsive Classroom, Developmental Designs, Caring School Communities, Second Step, etc.

  • Coach staff to recognize their biases, power and privilege and how the way they show up impacts their classroom culture

  • Coordinate and/or lead professional development on schoolwide climate practices, social emotional learning and restorative practices

  • Communicate and build relationships with a portfolio of schools, including educator and school leaders at those sites

  • Advise school teams in developing and implementing building policies that support a positive school climate and disrupt exclusionary practices

  • Collaborate with colleagues in departments such as:
    Accountability, Research & Equity, Equity & Integration, Multi-Lingual, Special Education, Teaching & Learning, etc.

Qualifications

  • Valid Minnesota teaching license

  • Minimum of 3 years of successful teaching experience; experience in MPS preferred

  • Experience with mentoring, coaching, and/or some aspect of teacher leadership

  • Knowledge and skill related to promotion of positive school climate, social emotional learning, mental health, trauma informed practices, classroom management, restorative practices, and violence prevention

  • Demonstrated skill in cross discipline work and teaming to accomplish common goals

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional collaboration with colleagues

  • Knowledge of principles of professional development; experience designing and delivering professional development with specific skills in coaching

  • Demonstrated skill and experience with cross cultural work and commitment to educational equity

  • Demonstrated skill in effective collaboration with team members

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Understand interconnections between restorative practices and Social Emotional Learning approaches (how to build structures at the secondary level)

  • Understanding of child and adolescent development and how climate, Social Emotional Learning and restorative practices should be adapted based on development

  • Preferred
    Qualifications:

    • Skilled in working with adult learners as well as students

    • Strong knowledge of cultural competence and equity work

    • Skilled in coaching and supporting all school staff in implementation of school wide initiatives

    • Familiarity and experience with SEL programs:
      Responsive Classroom, Developmental Designs, Caring School Community, Second Step, others

    • Skill and experience leading restorative circles, circles to repair harm and restorative conferencing

DPF positions are 43-week assignments. The additional four (4) weeks beyond the 39-week teacher contract will be determined by the manager.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
